Rescue Miracle as Venezuelan Earthquake Survivor Pulled from Rubble After 8 Days
In Venezuela's Catia La Mar, rescue teams from seven countries succeeded in saving Hernan Gil, a security guard trapped under rubble for eight days after the devastating twin earthquakes. His rescue, amid near-complete destruction from the June 24 quakes, was celebrated as a remarkable achievement, highlighting the international cooperation involved in the effort. Rescuers faced immense challenges, including avoiding further collapse and navigating through tons of debris, with Gil fed through a syringe during his extraction.
The earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5, resulted in nearly 2,600 deaths, thousands injured, and tens of thousands displaced. Rescue operations have yielded some small miracles, such as the rescue of an infant and minor injuries to a mother and child, but many casualties remain unaccounted for, with debris marked with a 'D' indicating no signs of life. The crisis has compounded Venezuela’s ongoing struggles with economic instability, damaged infrastructure, and limited access to aid, creating urgent needs for food, water, and medical supplies amidst increasing disease risks.
